Scheduled Classes

General Information

Classes are free to BVCC members; you may become a member of BVCC on-line. 

You must pre-register for each training session separately listed below by signing up at a preceding General Meeting; or by contacting Education Chair Jill Doll at bvccedu@bvcomputerclub.org or texting her at 320-828-3413.  Supply class title, your name, phone number, and email contact information.  If by email or text, you should follow-up if a confirmation response is not received within 24 hours.  Contact information is used to send a class reminder, or to advise should it be necessary to cancel or reschedule the class.

February Classes

Windows 11, What's New And How To Use It has been scheduled for Wednesday, Feb 11, 9am-11am.  Instructor Pete Opland.

Thunderbird Email Client Usage has been scheduled for Thursday, Feb 19, 1pm - 3pm.  Thunderbird is a very versatile and completely free email client that can be installed under Windows, variants of Linux, and MacOS and which has the same general user interface on all platforms.  Thunderbird makes it easy to manage and organize email from many different email accounts in a single place.  Topics include:  Download and installation of Thunderbird; setting up the definitions to access an email account; defining folders locally or under a specific email account using IMAP access; defining filters to automatically separate received emails into different folders; other useful features of Thunderbird.  Instructor Joel Ewing.

Storage Solutions, has been scheduled for Wednesday, Feb 25, 9am-11am.  Are you worried about storing massive amounts of data on multiple external drives?   Is your laptop C: drive running out of free space?  Can you afford a catastrophic failure?  If these questions are knocking on you front door, then a RAID array or NAS file server may be your solution!
Single or multiple laptop users in a home?  No problem.  Learn how to expand your storage space with a low budget home consumer NAS (Network Attached Server) file server.
Learn the easy way to install a RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) storage array in a desktop using Windows 10/11 Storage Spaces.  Instructor Pete Opland.

March Classes

Basic Computing, Part 1 has been scheduled for Wednesday, March 11, 9am - 11am.  Basic Computing Part 1 will introduce the hardware components, and Operating System, and program software used to make up a computer.   This will include basic hard drives, the motherboards, different types of storage, processors, EEPROMS, HDD’s, DVD’s, USB FDD’s.  We will cover how the Operating System uses and controls the hardware and the special program used for maintaining hard drives.  Instructor Pete Opland.

Basic Computing, Part 2 has been scheduled for Wednesday, March 25, 9am-11am.  Basic Computing Part 2 will introduce MS Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and how to configure and use them.  We will explain what an email client is and how it melds into our everyday computing.  We will explore the ins and out of the address book and how to safeguard our contacts using One Drive.  We will use and explore:

  1. Internet browsing and the use of different browsers (Chrome vs DuckDuckGo).
  2. Privacy features of DuckDuckGo vs Chrome.
  3. How DNS translates the website addresses from a search..
  4. Using a DNS benchmark program to pick best DNS server.

April Classes

Basic Computing, Part 3 has been scheduled for Wednesday, April 8, 9am-11am.  Our home networks are growing at a rapid rate (TV’s, refrigerators, security cameras, movie theaters, doorbell cameras, PCs, and printers among the few).  We will talk about the concepts of a home LAN (local area network) and the devices attached, and how and why a SOHO (small office-home office) smart switch will connect all your devices together.  One of the most important features of the home LAN network is the home file server.  You will learn how you to convert an old PC into a useful home file server at a very low cost!  We will delve into setting up and using a network printer, setting up a folder and program for scanning docs, and saving outside the user profile.
